I often get a lot of questions from other shooters, and other aspiring photographers, ranging from questions about equipment, technique, and lighting etc. Lately I have been getting a lot about lighting, ambient or otherwise. For me personally I really enjoy shooting in natural light. I think it tends to help create moments, or emotion that wouldn’t otherwise be there with a flash or otherwise. I think it also can stretch you as a photographer.
And I am not talking about “technique” or the “technicals”. To me, thats up to the shooter. They are important yes, and key to learning. But figuring out how to work your camera, and figuring out the “rules ” of photography are there purely to break. Learn them, then forget them. Find your style, and your voice in your work, and do THAT.
Anyways, the beauty of shooting in natural light is it requires an an attention to detail, the subject and surrounding that would otherwise not be as important. Sometimes even requiring more time in waiting for that moment to occur. For example the image below, I am not sure I could tell you at what f stop I shot this at or what shutter speed, although it looks like f/2 and around a 60-80 shutter speed, but I waited for Brody to make his way towards the back of the house where I know the most sun comes in, in the morning. I framed the shot, and waited for him to give me that look like, “Hey you old man, quit standing around with that shiny square and give me something sweet to go with this milk!”
But in all seriousness, this image for me is who my son is. And I love it. But know it would of been worthless had I not waited on that moment to present itself.
