I dont think I have made it any secret that I love what I do. I think it’s rare that you find opportunity to make a living out of what you’re passionate about. There is no doubt that God has blessed me to be able to meet the people I have over the last few years, and work with the couples and families that I have.
However, it would be thoughtless of me not to think or talk about the influence of those I have been in contact with through this point in my life/career. I just want to take a little bit of your time to let you know how BIG of an influence these guys have been in my life.
1. Henri-Cartier Bresson – Now this is a little less personal for a few reasons. For one, he is dead. Secondly, I never actually knew the guy. But there is no doubt his work has made a MAJOR impact on me and my preference or style of shooting. If you are starting out in photography go get his DVD, the Impassioned Eye.
2. Adam Barnes – to most of you, you know this guy.( Some of you have from afar, seen our strange, bizarre bromance manifest itself via facebook or twitter.) And for good reason. Adam, hands down, creates the most beautiful images I have ever laid my eyes on. If you think I am kidding, go to www.adambarnesphoto.com and check that cat out. A true artist who wraps himself in his art. He is deeply involved and passionate about his work. A long long time ago, he let me tag along, and later I got to work with him on a more frequent basis. I began to understand from him, what it would take to “create” a portrait. I have never encountered anyone who tells a story with imagery like he does. He is truly a special talent. And on top of all of that, he is a great, great, GREAT, guy… who i may or may not have a strange bromance via facebook or twitter with.
3. Jeremy Pegg – I consider Jeremy to be the 2009 version of Bresson. How this guy walks into a room and meters light with his eye, and with no real help from his camera is beyond me. I dont know another photographer who can shoot 600 images at a wedding and not have to edit 1 of them. NOT 1. that is crazy talent. I could go on and on and on about Jeremy’s photographic talent, or you can go take a look yourself. www.enigmapro.com but here is the thing, Pegg’s influence reaches beyond the realm of photography and business. He is a brother. This is the guy, if you dont have already, every man needs in their life for sharpening. To bounce stuff off of. To talk crap out with. To share in life with. Alright, you get the point. I am getting waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay deeper than I wanted to get.
Here is the point. We all have our heroes right? As a kid I loved Sterling Sharpe and Herman Moore. And playing football, I wore number 84 because of them. I wanted to play like them. The same applies here. These are two guys who have helped me along the way, and have inspired and pushed me to “kick it up a notch” as Izzy Mandelbaum once said, and thought they deserved the recognition for what it was.
